Prague Architecture

Prague (Praha) is the capital city of the Czech Republic. The city is located along the Vltava River in the middle of Bohemia.

Prague is a city of nearly 2 million people, but because it was spared massive bombing during the two World wars, it is a historic preserve for architecture from the last 1,100 years. Prague is known as the "Golden City" and the "City of a Hundred Spires" and once you climb to Prague Castle you realize why.

Czechoslovakia was created after World War I, as negotiators carved up the once great Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Germans marched in and took control of the country in 1939. The Soviet Union marched in 1945, but they hardly were liberators. It would be 1989 before the country would emerge from the Iron Curtain. In 1993, the Czech Republic and Slovakia peacefully separated into two countries.

Prague was my favorite city to visit in Europe. The well preserved architecture makes you feel as though you have stepped back in time. My peers (teens and early 20-somethings) barely remember, if they were alive at all, what it was like to live under the Iron Curtain. Prague has emerged as one of the most thriving cities in Europe and I highly recommend a visit! Allow yourself at least three days to experience all that Prague has to offer.
